Hearth Theatre

“Hearth Theatre is a testament to how in terms of ingenuity and passion, independent companies are surpassing our mainstage, commercially funded companies in their interpretations of the classics.”

Hearth Theatre creates thrilling work that is ensemble led and which celebrates the unpredictability of the stage, the alchemy of live performance and the joy of exploring worlds that share our humanity.

Founded by actor Charlie Cousins (The Doctor Blake Mysteries, Bell Shakespeare, Sydney Theatre Company, and Red Stitch), Hearth Theatre was launched in 2018 with an immersive and site specific production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea by John Patrick Shanley to critical acclaim and an entirely sold out season.

Hearth’s second show was Marriage by Nikolai Gogol. Unfortunately after working on the play for a year (in 2019 & 2020) with a dedicated cast, and one week from opening, COVID hit and we couldn’t continue.

Our latest production of Arthur Miller’s classic Death of a Salesman premiered at the iconic Melbourne theatre fortyfivedownstairs in 2022 and attracted widespread critical acclaim, full houses, and standing ovations every night.

This year sees us taking Death of a Salesman on tour through Victoria and New South Wales and we are thrilled to be sharing this amazing play with a wider audience.

After the decimation of the performing arts over the last few years from COVID and the ever-dwindling Government support, and in a climate where State Theatre Companies are becoming more and more reluctant to even put on a large cast, ensemble classic let alone tour it, to be touring Death of a Salesman in 2023 is akin to a miracle.

The courage, will and commitment from everyone at Hearth Theatre to bring this scale of work into existence and have it available to new audiences and to new generations is profound and empowering.

Hearth Theatre is incredibly excited to bring this unforgettable play to audiences and we’re committed, in the years to come, to touring world-class theatre to remote and regional areas to nurture and inspire our cultural landscape.
